On June 17, 2017, the New Jersey Devils closed out the draft day by trading second- and fourth-round selections for a fifth-round choice and former San Jose Sharks defender Mirco Mueller. The 22-year-old Mueller initially joined the Sharks as a first round selection in 2013, having previously played in his native Switzerland for the junior and adult Kloten teams. He first played in North America in the 2012-2013 season with the Western Hockey League's Everett Silvertips, for whom he scored 58 points over 123 games.

Since joining the NHL, Mirco Mueller has scored six points, including two points and a plus-two rating across four games in the 2016-2017 season. His skill set includes strong skating power, deep knowledge of the game, and a talent in positioning that experts believe will benefit the team.
